School Counseling Groups
There are a number of counseling groups at Meadowview Elementary School. Groups offered include friendship, family changes, self-esteem, social skills, grief, and study skills. If you're interested in having your child join one of our school counseling groups, you can contact your child's teacher or Jackie Brand, the school counselor.
Groups run from October-April. Groups meet on a weekly basis and are led by the school counselor Mrs. Brand or one of our counseling interns.Parent permission is required for student participation in groups. Groups are held at a variety of times that work with each student's schedule.
If you have a child participating in a psychoeducational group (friendship, social skills, study skills) he or she will receive a goal sheet after each session. Your child should be sharing this goal sheet with you after each group. If you are not receiving this sheet, please let the school counselor know right away.
PAWS Reps
Each Trimester, two students from each 3rd, 4th & 5th Grade classroom serve as PAWS Reps at Meadowview Elementary.
PAWS Reps are our student leaders at MVES. Some of the responsibilities of PAWS Reps include:
- Creating character education videos for students
- Passing out Tiger Paws Awards to students demonstrating good behavior
- Creating character education bulletin boards each month
- Making leadership decisions that help students at our school
- Giving tours to new students
- Being role models at MVES (students are expected to be responsible, respectful and kind)
PAWS Reps are chosen by peers and staff. New PAWS Reps are chosen each trimester.
I-Team
Jackie Brand, MVES School Counselor co-leads the school's Intervention Team. The I-Team meets weekly with regular education and special education teachers. The I-Team is a collaborative educational team that supports classroom teachers as they target academic, social/emotional and behavioral interventions.
Parents may be invited to attend an I-Team meeting for their child. The purpose of this is to exchange essential information that can help students succeed.
If you have concerns about your child's academic, social/emotional or behavioral progress, first contact your child's teacher.
Classroom Guidance Lessons
Mrs. Soweija and Mrs. Brand teach regular classroom lessons to students throughout the school year.
During the school counselor's lessons, students learn about the character education trait of the month, social emotional topics, coping strategies and social skills.
Lessons typically involve activities, class discussions…and fun! After each lesson, students receive a letter for parents which provides ideas for reinforcing the lesson at home.
PBIS & Character Education
At MVES, we regularly teach and recognize exceptional character. Students learn about the school-wide expectations through classroom lessons and staff and student-created videos. You can check out all the school-wide expectations here.
Students can also earn Paw Awards for demonstrating our school-wide expectations. Paw Awards are turned in for a variety of prizes and special privileges.
Tiger Paws
Students also learn about character via our Tiger Paws traits of the month. These traits are taught and reinforced through the morning announcements, classroom lessons and student and staff-created videos.
